Customer Problem
An existing SX1276 design may face a supply constraint or a new power target. Purchasing asks whether SX1262 can replace it, but the decision affects the board, software and validation plan before it affects the quotation.
The useful comparison is the work needed to satisfy the same product requirement. It is not an overall ranking of the two chip families.
Technical Background
The reviewed baselines are Semtech SX1261/2 Rev. 2.1 (December 2021) and SX1276/77/78/79 Rev. 7 (May 2020). Their ordering and pinout information identifies QFN-24, 4 × 4 mm for SX1262 and a QFN-28 package for SX1276. These package facts already prevent assuming an unchanged PCB footprint.
SX1262 uses a command-oriented host interface with BUSY handling; SX1276 integration uses its documented register and interrupt behavior. Both use SPI, but that label does not establish common commands, timing, control routing or a reusable driver. These are architectural observations from the cited interface descriptions.

| Review area | SX1262 baseline | SX1276 baseline | Procurement implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Package | QFN-24 · 4 × 4 mm | QFN-28 | Do not release an unchanged-board substitution. |
| Host integration | Command interface; BUSY handling | Documented register/interrupt model | Plan a firmware and control-signal review. |
| RF performance | Use its own electrical table conditions | Use its own electrical table conditions | No winner is assigned from unmatched values. |
Selection or Sourcing Risks
A package migration can change routing, grounding, exposed-pad connections and assembly requirements. Review the actual land patterns and circuit design instead of treating an adapter as proof of RF equivalence.
Advertised sensitivity and output-power endpoints are not normalized results. The SX1276 LoRa electrical section supplies its own test setup; those conditions must not be silently transferred to SX1262. This page makes no numerical performance ranking.
Verification Checklist
- Full MPNs, package drawings, PCB footprint and pin functions.
- Host driver model, BUSY/interrupt routing, reset and startup sequence.
- Clock source, power distribution and external control requirements.
- RF matching, filtering, antenna path and intended operating channels.
- A common measurement plan covering modem settings, supply, temperature and error criterion.
Practical Recommendations
Create a change matrix before requesting production substitutes. Classify each difference as PCB, firmware, RF network, power or validation work, assign an owner and estimate the required requalification.
For an existing board, retain the approved exact part until engineering accepts a redesign. For a new design, compare the complete BOM and software plan, not only the transceiver headline specification.
RFVero Sourcing Support
RFVero can coordinate exact-MPN sourcing and organize documents or candidate samples for review. A quotation for SX1262IMLTRT alongside SX1276IMLTRT identifies two purchasing references, not interchangeable goods.
The customer must validate firmware operation, RF behavior, environmental performance and compliance of the changed product. No pin-to-pin or drop-in compatibility claim is made.
