Wireless IC Procurement for Industrial IoT

Translate deployment constraints into an approved wireless IC requirement and a purchasing plan for sensors, meters, embedded nodes and industrial communication.

English technical source · Procurement reference

Manufacturer document versions and applicable conditions are listed below. This detailed guide is currently available in English.

Customer Problem

Industrial IoT purchasing often starts with “long range” or “low power,” while deployment engineers are concerned with installation environment, maintenance, network access and interference. Those phrases need measurable, application-specific requirements before an IC is selected.

The following scenarios describe requirement planning only. They are not RFVero customer projects, validated designs or promises of radio range or battery life.

Technical Background

A transceiver may depend on an external host, while a wireless MCU integrates processing resources. The cited Semtech and TI documents describe different architectures; neither architecture is automatically a substitute for the other.

Current consumption is state- and configuration-dependent. A system energy budget includes wake-up, processing, transmit/receive activity, idle periods and external circuitry. Do not infer product battery life from one advertised chip current.

Selection or Sourcing Risks

For smart metering, clarify network/protocol requirements and a multi-year maintenance plan. For wireless sensors, review payload rate, installation losses and the selected power source. Industrial communication may impose latency, coexistence and availability constraints that a family name does not resolve.

An embedded wireless product also needs a host/software ownership plan and regulatory review for its destination markets. Procurement cannot treat a broad IC tuning range as approval for all local channels.

Verification Checklist

  • Deployment region, channels, network and protocol requirements.
  • Payload, reporting interval, latency, coexistence and maintenance expectations.
  • Host architecture, firmware/SDK support and ownership of updates.
  • Power source, operating states, temperature and environmental requirements.
  • Approved full MPN, package, production schedule and lifecycle review.
  • Customer acceptance plan and restrictions on substitutions.

Practical Recommendations

Create an application requirement sheet with engineering before requesting sources. Use it to define the released exact MPN and, separately, the allowable envelope for an alternative evaluation.

Plan qualification and purchasing together. A new source for the same approved code and a new wireless architecture are different change levels; apply the appropriate evidence and approval process to each.

RFVero Sourcing Support

RFVero supports component requirement review, MPN identification, sourcing inquiries and agreed documentation coordination for Industrial IoT procurement. It can help organize supplier questions and sample requests.

It does not claim completed application projects, certified radio designs, measured battery life or system reliability results. Customer engineering approves network integration, RF performance and regulatory suitability.
