SX1262 vs SX1268: Key Differences

Frequency coverage and implementation review come before a procurement substitution between two closely related Semtech transceiver families.

English technical source · Procurement reference

Manufacturer document versions and applicable conditions are listed below. This detailed guide is currently available in English.

Customer Problem

An RFQ may treat SX1262 and SX1268 as alternatives because their names, package style and command-oriented interfaces appear similar. The first decision is whether the intended operating channels fall within the documented capability of the particular device.

A shared family resemblance should trigger a targeted review, not an automatic substitution on a production order.

Technical Background

The reviewed SX1261/2 Rev. 2.1 baseline describes SX1262 operation over 150–960 MHz; SX1268 Rev. 1.1 (June 2019) describes coverage of 410–810 MHz. These are documented device tuning capabilities, not permission to transmit anywhere in those ranges or equal performance at every frequency.

A channel outside the documented SX1268 range cannot be justified by its similarity to SX1262. Inside an overlapping range, the circuit implementation, electrical test conditions and applicable limitations still require their own review.

Selection or Sourcing Risks

Ordering a similar part for a product variant intended for another region can create an unusable lot even when the package appears compatible. Destination-market planning must therefore be part of the MPN review.

Neither common packaging nor a familiar host API proves an unchanged matching network, firmware setting set or qualified radio configuration. Compare the current pinout, commands, calibration guidance and reference design before reusing any implementation.

Verification Checklist

  • Exact operating channels and destination-market requirements.
  • Full ordering code, package drawing and electrical pin functions.
  • Matching/filtering components and reference-clock assumptions at the target band.
  • Supported modem settings, calibration steps and known limitations.
  • Revision-specific power and receiver data under matched conditions.

Practical Recommendations

Perform a band-eligibility check first. If it fails, stop the substitution review rather than looking for compensating advantages elsewhere.

For an overlapping-band candidate, record all differences in a customer-owned validation plan. The reviewed SX1268 baseline is older than the current manufacturer listing; obtain the latest document and errata before a production decision.

RFVero Sourcing Support

RFVero can identify the two ordering references, request source options and coordinate documentation for an evaluation request. The procurement record should state whether the customer requires an exact MPN or is considering a separately approved candidate.

RFVero does not claim that SX1268 directly replaces SX1262, nor that a board validated for one is qualified for the other.
