Customer Problem
A buyer may describe a transceiver as obsolete because a familiar source cannot supply it. That observation does not establish a manufacturer discontinuance, nor does an online listing establish current usable supply.
The first task is to determine what is actually constrained: a full ordering code, an approved channel, a packing option, a delivery date or the design itself.
Technical Background
A datasheet identifies technical behavior and ordering information for its stated revision. It is not a live lifecycle or inventory record. Check manufacturer lifecycle entries and any product-change or discontinuance notice for the exact code and date.
If an exact-part option is unavailable, an alternative is an engineering candidate. Firmware, interface, package, supply and RF implementation can change even when the modulation or general function looks similar.

Selection or Sourcing Risks
Hard-to-find sourcing may involve incomplete traceability or uncertain handling history. Record what evidence is available, which limitations are acceptable and who approves the risk; do not convert an assurance into a test result.
A last-time-buy commitment can create excess, storage and redesign-schedule exposure. Distinguish forecasts from firm demand and consider whether quantities bridge a documented qualification plan.
Verification Checklist
- Full MPN and last engineering-approved design revision.
- Manufacturer lifecycle/notice evidence and its checked date.
- Firm build need, buffer policy and approved source restrictions.
- Available lot, date-code, packing, handling and traceability records.
- Inspection or external-test scope and discrepancy process.
- Engineering-owned redesign and alternate qualification milestones.
Practical Recommendations
Run two explicit workstreams: exact-part sourcing against the approved BOM and an alternative evaluation request against a defined acceptance envelope. Keep their approvals separate.
For any lifecycle notice, retain the affected-code list and time conditions from the original document. Reconfirm them before accepting a purchasing commitment; do not derive a lifetime guarantee from an older datasheet.
RFVero Sourcing Support
RFVero can investigate reported supply options, request available documentation and coordinate quotations or evaluation samples. Availability and evidence are source-specific and confirmed in writing.
No obsolete inventory pool, guaranteed authenticity from appearance alone, universal replacement or in-house testing capability is claimed. Customer engineering approves redesigns and alternatives.
