LR1121 and LR2021 should be treated as distinct procurement and integration projects. Modem or over-the-air compatibility is not evidence of pin, host-interface, firmware or reference-design interchangeability. Quote the approved part first; consider a different family only through a customer-controlled evaluation.

Semtech places LR1121 in LoRa Connect and LR2021 in LoRa Plus. Its LR2021 product page describes a newer modem generation and additional physical-layer options. That overview establishes product context, not a complete comparison under matched electrical conditions. The page links an LR2021/22/12 datasheet v2.2 dated 8 August 2026. The full document was not readable in this review, so an exact LR2021 order code, package and electrical table are not asserted here.
Procurement risks
A buyer can mistake a base family name for a complete order code, or interpret protocol compatibility as board compatibility. Requirements may also depend on firmware releases, host drivers and external RF networks. A newer generation does not automatically mean a lower migration cost. Do not rank sensitivity, output power or energy consumption using unmatched manufacturer headline values.

For LR1121 exact-part purchasing, use the approved ordering reference already documented in the BOM. For LR2021, resolve its complete manufacturer ordering identity before accepting an offer. Ask engineering to separate software migration, PCB changes and RF validation tasks; a distributor can coordinate information without declaring a drop-in replacement.
